🚀 Mussel App Is Growing – Here’s Everything We’ve Built Lately

We’ve been exceptionally busy over the last few months, rapidly growing our number of clients and generating strong interest around the globe. Recently, we spoke at the Morocco aquaculture conference, visited Tasmania (again 🙂 , toured multiple Australian farms, and engaged with industry partners in Chile.

Now we’re back—excited to share all the incredible progress we’ve made in the Mussel App.

🧭 We’re Here for the Long Haul

We hear a common concern from farmers: “What if the software we’re using disappears?” That’s a fair question—and one we take seriously.

Mussel App is proudly developed and supported by FutureLab, our parent company, which has helped drive innovation across multiple industries for over a decade. We’re not just another software startup—we’re here with a long-term commitment, a clear 10-year vision, and a track record of building tools that stick around and evolve with our users.

Since our last newsletter alone, five people have dedicated over 597 hours to new features, improvements, and fixes for Mussel App. That’s a reflection of just how much work goes into building, maintaining, and improving a truly reliable platform for aquaculture – and it shows our commitment to you.

Being independent and self-funded gives us the flexibility to stay focused on what matters most: supporting farmers with practical tools and real solutions.

✅ Latest Product Updates

  1. Visual Batch Management on Google Maps
    You can now view and manage batches directly on Google Maps. See where each batch is located, move it visually, and even track its family lineage—all while standing on the farm with your mobile in hand. This includes batch splitting and family tracking to improve predictability and traceability.
  2. Time Tracking Simplifications
    We simplified time tracking to the bare minimum—no unnecessary pop-ups or complicated steps. Designed to let you log your work in seconds, not minutes, so you can stay focused on what matters.
  3. Boat Refuelling and Efficiency Reports
    Farmers can now log boat refuels with just a tap. This data can be used to generate reports on boat efficiency—helping you reduce costs and track operational performance over time.
  4. Enhanced Harvest Calculators
    Major improvements to harvest calculators now allow you to enter your own harvest predictions. We’re also trialling Gaussian-based statistical models to forecast growth—and letting you compare your guess with the system’s estimate.
  5. Improved Mortality Management and Reporting
    Track and report mortality in a much clearer and more controlled way. Whether it’s natural loss or operational change, it’s all now easily recorded and analysed for better decision-making.
  6. Upgraded Inventory Management
    Assign default line methods, streamline data entry, and generate smarter reports—our inventory tools are now faster and more farmer-friendly.
  7. Dynamic Line-Fill Calculations
    Farmers can now manually input how full a line is, even if the theoretical capacity isn’t quite right, especially helpful when using variable dropper lengths or changing farming styles.
  8. Batch Harvesting and Seeding Efficiency
    Speed up your workflow with batch harvesting and seeding. You can now mix batches in a single action and keep full traceability across the entire lifecycle. This is important especially when you harvest and mix batches but you’d still like to maintain connection to the original batch.
  9. New FLUPSY Nursery Management
    Introducing FLUPSY tracking—our newest feature to monitor oyster spat even before they reach baskets. From delivery to early growth, every step is now traceable.
  10. Comprehensive New Reporting Tools
    We’ve added reports for batch tracking, size breakdown, stock per customer, and a handy batch finder. More transparency = better decisions.

🧠 What We’re Working on Next
We’re not slowing down. Here’s what’s in development this month:

  • Predictability 2.0 – We’re combining farm data with weather inputs for the first time in aquaculture software history, using basic machine learning models to forecast growth and harvest readiness based not only on your batch growth but also environment variables!
  • Sensor and Software Integrations – Live farm status updates are coming through integrations with environmental sensors and other farming software.
  • Automatic Open/Closure Alerts – Area open or closure notifications, powered by sensor data, will soon be automatic.
  • Weekly Timesheets – Logging every task takes time. We’re simplifying this with weekly timesheet reports for quick summaries of your farm’s activities.
  • RFID Trials Underway – Our secret durability trial using RFID scanning is ongoing. Results on the best-performing plastic for long-term underwater use will be shared soon.
