Spat Storage Concept

Overview

Spat storage in Mussel App allows you to track the lifecycle of mussels or oysters (spat) when they are taken out of the water, either for moving between locations or prior to reaching your farm. This feature is essential for managing spat from hatcheries or during intermediate stages in the farming process.

What is Spat Storage?

Spat storage refers to the period when mussels or oysters are out of the water, including:

  • Before arriving at your farm (e.g., from a hatchery).
  • During movements between different lines or farms.

Tracking spat storage ensures that you can monitor the entire lifecycle of your spat and understand where and how it was harvested, moved, and seeded.

Steps to Use Spat Storage in Mussel App

  1. Harvesting Spat:
    • When a line is catching spat (e.g., Portage Line 11A), and it’s ready for harvesting, you can click Harvest Complete.
    • The spat is now considered in storage (out of the water) and not yet processed.
    • Input details such as the weight of the spat (e.g., half a tonne) and the line length harvested or dozens of oysters and number of containers. A Catch Spat ID will be created to track the batch.
  2. Moving Spat to Another Line:
    • After harvesting, you may want to seed the spat onto another line. For example, you could move spat from Portage Line 11A to Kanepuru Line 14B and even multiple lines and multiple farms.
    • Enter the relevant spat details (e.g., weight and line length or dozens and number of containers) and confirm the seeding. The system will now track the spat’s movement and growth on the new line.

Key Benefits of Spat Storage

  1. Tracking and History:
    • Mussel App keeps a full history of where spat has been harvested, moved, and seeded. This data is available for both farmers and boat crews to access via the app, allowing for efficient tracking of spat movements.
  2. Success Ratio:
    • Spat storage enables you to calculate the success ratio of your spat. For example, if you initially harvest spat from one line and move it across others before harvesting again, you can determine the success ratio by comparing the amount of spat produced at different stages. This metric helps assess the effectiveness of your farming practices.

Receiving Spat from Hatcheries

You can also use spat storage for tracking hatchery spat:

  • Enter details such as the hatchery ID and the amount of spat received.
  • Mussel App will log and maintain the spat’s history, enabling you to track its movement and performance once it’s seeded on your lines.

The spat storage feature in Mussel App provides essential tracking and management tools for your farm. By monitoring the lifecycle of your spat and using the success ratio feature, you can make more informed decisions about your farming practices and improve your yield.
